What have we achieved?

The money raised since 2002 has funded 40,000 books!

Book titles printed and distributed include:-

  • “The Gold Plant” - traditional humorous tales.
  • “Borders of Afghanistan” - a historical text
  • “The Colourful Hen” and "The Adventures of Sinbad" - illustrated stories for children.
  • "Salgan in the West" - classic Afghan literature
  • “Drug Awareness for Children”
  • “First Theft” - fables in verse for older readers.
  • “Knowledge and Fun 3, 4, 5 & 6” - reading puzzles and quizzes

The books are distributed to schools and community libraries in Afghanistan, meaning that thousands of children can now enjoy a range of fictional and educational texts.

We respond to Afghan requests, so we fund what is needed, where it is needed.

In addition to the books funded we were able to buy bicycles so that teachers, such as Abdul Hadi and Abdur Raziq, teachers in Jalozi refugee camp, can get from home to the camp reliably and without spending their pay, needed to buy food for their families.

Equipment is funded for teachers to help them teach. Bicycles are provided for teachers in rural areas to help them get to the school.

ARP funded newspapers and journals at the request of the girls attending Amina Fedawi School in Kabul. This supported a new library in the school set up by The Afghan Youth Fund, a UK charity.

The projects funded by ARP are overseen by Dr. Farid Bazger, who has championed literacy and education for all Afghans, sometimes at great personal risk.

Dr. Farid has visited village and city schools, universities in Kabul and Jalalabad, and classes in refugee camps where families have fled from local fighting or drought. He meets the men and women dedicated to teaching and the students of all ages who know that education is their pathway to a better future.

As Afghan state funding cannot meet the overwhelming needs of the devastated country, it is no surprise that we receive more grant requests than can be funded. We aim to fund book titles that support Afghan needs now, and that support Afghan literary culture and heritage. Donated money works more than once, as the publication process provides income for Afghan illustrators, writers and printers.

Every £1 makes a difference,

- £1 prints 5 children’s books
- £8 provides books for a class
- £2200 provides a resource and library room for a school
